This country legend held the record for the most #1 hits by a country artist with 55. But that record fell in 2008 when
George Strait passed that magic number.
His real name was Harold Lloyd Jenkins. His stage name it was reported, came from looking at a road map and seeing
Conway Arkansas, and Twitty Texas. He grew up in Friars Point Miss and his dad, who was a Ferry Boat Captain that
crossed the Mississippi to Helena Ark, showed him a few chords on the guitar.
Fate nearly saw him become a professional baseball player with the Philadelphia Philies right out of high school, but a draft into the
Army put an end to that plan. When he was discharged, he heard Elvis ... and that convinced him he could do what Elvis was
doing ... blend different styles of music.
His monster hit "Its Only Make Believe", was written by Conway and his drummer between sets while they were touring
and doing a show in Hamilton Ont Canada. A DJ in Ohio liked it better than the A side and began playing it and its popularity
spread nationwide.
