Where was Elvis Presley born? No, not Memphis (I knew you knew) but in Tupelo, Mississippi on Jan 8th 1935. He did however move to Memphis, Tennessee with his family when he was just 13 years old.

By the time Elvis was 19, he and guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black formed their own rockabilly band and caught the attention of Sam Phillis at Sun Records. They were signed to RCA Victor and were managed by the infamous Col Tom Parker ... who was also managing Hank Snow.

Hank Snow, from my home province of Nova Scotia Canada, wanted Elvis to open for him on the Grand Ole Opry, and that's when Col Parker met Elvis. Col Tom Parker got Elvis his first contract with RCA in 1956 and Elvis's dad Vernon had to sign the paperwork because Elvis was under 21.

What might have not happened ... had Hank Snow not asked Elvis to open for him at the Grand Ole Opry? Scarry thought! Later in 1956 Elvis had his first #1 with the release of Heartbreak Hotel ... and the world was never the same since.

His first movie was actually slated to be called The Reno Brothers, but due to brisk sales of Love Me Tender, the movie was renamed to the same title.

When That's Alright Mama was released, most people thought Elvis was black, and many disc jockeys refused to play Elvis Presley music based on this assumption.
