Ricky's parents hosted a long running radio show for 10 years and on TV for 14 years called The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet.
When Billboard introduced their Hot 100 chart back in 1958, Ricky Nelson had the first #1 hit on that chart with "Poor Little Fool".
Ricky's father Ozzie, had his son perform at the end of their show .. but kept him from appearing on American Bandstand
and The Ed Sullivan show when he was in demand. By the time he hit the Sullivan show, his time had faded. Sadly, in the 50's and 60's,
only Elvis was more popular in Rock and Roll than Ricky Nelson. Guess you could say their market timing was a bit off.
At age 21 he wanted to be known as Rick Nelson .. but when his idol Carl Perkins addressed him as Ricky,
he had his manager switch his name back to Ricky.
Nelson was on tour with some 50's legends, but choose to sing The Stones "Honky Tonk Woman" part way thru his set.
He was booed for not sticking to his 50's tunes and shortly after left the stage. The song "Garden Party" was written about that incident.

Trying to duplicate a nostalgic rock tour that was successful in England during the mid 80's, Nelson wanted to see if it would work in the US.
He died in a plane crash on New Years Eve 1985 en-route to Dallas Texas to play a NYE concert. He was 45.
Crash investigators looking into the Ricky Nelson death suspected that the aircraft cabin heater was the cause of the crash.
